Welcome to the Austin Ki Aikido Center

Congratulations! You are embarking on a challenging, fun, thought-provoking, sweaty, and life-sustaining journey.

The word "Aikido" is composed of three Chinese characters. The last character is "do", which translates as "way" or "path." The study of Aikido is a life-long process and goes far beyond simply learning pins or throws. Aikido was developed as a way of self-development, in addition to being an effective system of selfdefense. As you practice, you will notice many opportunities for self-development. For example, you will learn how you currently handle threatening or angry situations. What do you do with that energy the universe has just sent your way? And what would you like to be able to do with it? For the word "Aikido" means,"way of harmony with the universe."

For the students who apply themselves to their practice, the dojo will become a laboratory for learning. These students will explore how to integrate their mind and body, in addition to performing techniques. If you enjoy the process of learning, you will not be disheartened to learn that initially you have two left feet or that Aikido is not mastered in six weeks or even six months.

So I encourage you to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. The coordination of mind and body is something that is experienced, not just thought about. Developing a regular, frequent practice is the key to beginning – and staying with – a path like Aikido.

I and the other instructors at the Center are here to teach and encourage you. If you have questions or concerns, please let us know. I look forward to seeing you on the mat!

Sincerely,
Kathey Ferland
